I have Spyware... again

Tue 05.31.2005 @ 2:15 pm
I hate spyware. I hate the fact that useless crap pops up every other minute. I hate the fact that it makes my ibook slow. I hate the fact that my "supposedly" anti spyware program not only didn't warn me about the spyware, but it can't even locate it on my hard drive. So... I have spent two hours digging manually through each drive, looking for that stupid Aurora and can't find shit! Anyone have any ideas?

Johnny Depp

Mon 05.30.2005 @ 5:11 am
listening to: The Game

I haven't talked about how dissapointing "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was. I love Douglas Adams and his books are on my favorite list, but this movie... it's obvious that Adams did not have the last word on this b/c his particular satirical humor went to shit.
Nothing made much sense, and his brilliant quips about society were lost and labeled kooky and stupid. Well at least that is what happened here in the states, and even though I knew what was going on in the movie, the other audience members who had never read the books or listened to the radio broadcasts were left not only not laughing, but turning their attention to their cellphones, like the guy sitting next to me was doing. They should have just followed the books. Those are brilliant, and if you like dark humor, it's a must read.

Anyway, I'll be changing the top banner soon. And I can't wait till the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" movie comes out. I saw the preview for it the other day and my mom didn't even recognize Charlie was Johnny Depp for the first few frames. And really, I can not think of one movie of Johnny's I didn't like, well there is one, "The Ninth Gate", but it was the editing that killed it.

And then there is the very obviously fabulous factor that it's Charlie is directed by Tim Burton! And speaking of Tim, can't wait till the Corpse Bride comes out, consequently also featuring Johnny. *smile*

And as a gift, here's a delicious and nutritious image of johnny for your viewing pleasure. This is one of my favorite photos of him.

And here is a link to a very good Depp site, which is where I found the pic.

I'm getting a tan...

Wed 05.25.2005 @ 9:13 pm
I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in the southern states all you need to do to get your summer tan going is drive your car. So when you decide to go anywhere presentable you have to make sure you wear something long sleeved so they don't see you ugly arm tan that ends near your shoulder blade.

And then what's even worse is; if you want to even the tan you go to the pool or beach, but it never works. The tan that started in the car only gets darker and darker, no matter how much you try to even it out. So you always look like some kind of featheless chicken walking around town. Why don't people down here wear sunscreen? Well, it needs to be reapplied every 15-30 minutes (or so the bottle says) to be effective, and I don't know many people who have what it takes to drop whatever it is they are doing to reapply their sunscreen.

So in short, know what I do? I just wear long sleeves and driver gloves while I'm in the car. B/c tans on me last a long, long time. I went to cancun in march and I still have my tan lines.

Knockoff Yellow Wristbands

Recently I've seen a lot of people, at least here in Houston that are wearing the yellow wristbands in support of Lance Armstrong's foundation against cancer. I bought some the other day, you can only buy packs of ten so I got some for my family and friends. I figure if they get theirs for free but then go and buy ten for their family and friends and so on and so forth it'd be a stellar contribution.

There's one thing that bothers me though. I have also seen the same cancer wristbands but in pink, purple, and green; which means they are knockoffs. How can anyone knock off an object that was made to help support cancer research? And kids around here are sporting them on their wrists all together like some sick fashion statement, that's not only pathetic but it's wrong. They even say "Livestrong" like the Amrstrong ones do.

Here is an odd site, kinda sorta like ebay but free. Who doesn't like free right? It's called Free Cycle and what you can do with it is this. You can give your unwanted crap to someone who wants it and vice versa. One man's trash is another man's treasure. You can find some pretty odd things but it's worth a look.

Caved in... watched Star Wars

Mon 05.23.2005 @ 9:34 pm
So I caved in and after watching the horrible movie Dominion on saturday I had to go back to the theater and get that sour aftertaste off my tongue. I watched Star Wars. *sigh*
And it was pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised. B/c the last two movies in my opinion I could have done without, they were awful, but this one I enjoyed. Almost as much as the original Star Wars. Hayden Christensen was cast dead on as Darth Vader.
I have a question though, why does Yoda fight in these three episodes but in the original episodes he can't? Time only passed like what? 20 years when the original ones start right?
And I do have a problem with the ending and Obi One, but I won't ruin the movie for everyone. Go see it if you can and avoid Dominion like the plague!.

I want the Life Aquatic theme for a ringer. If you go to their website they have the option to download it to your phone, for free! And I can't do it! For some stupid reason it doesn't go through. What does a phone that has internet, pda, mp3... do me when I can't download the ring tone I want? And it's a killer ringtone. I loved the Life Aquatic and now... I'm stuck knowing other phones can get the theme song but not me...

I got nothing blog worthy to write about today... Well other than I watched Oprah today and found out I have been wearing the wrong bra size. yippee

So here goes the "Friday Q Quiz" instead.

FQ TOPIC: Foreign.

FQ1: What's your native language? Do you speak any foreign languages? If so, how did you come to learn them?
My native language is spanish though I feel more comfortable in english since all my schooling was done in that language. I came to learn english when I moved here from Colombia.

FQ2: What's your native country? Have you visited any foreign countries? If so, which ones?
Hmm, I already answered this question but... I was born in Bogota, Colombia. Coffee capital of the world. I have visited/lived in, Colombia, Mexico and the USA.

FQ3: Are there any foreign foods, books, movies, or other items that you are particularly fond of? Name some of your favorites.
Foods... I like all kinds. Books, I go by author not nationality in my tastes. But I read anything and all topics. Some of my favorites are (I'm mixing titles and authors here) Jack Kerouac, Clockwork Orange, Douglas Adams, Narnia, Isabel Allende, Book of Five Rings, Poe, The Electric Koolaid Acid Test, Mineko Iwasaki, Shakespeare etc...

FQ NATIVE: If you had to trade your nationality for that of any foreign country, which would you choose and why?
That is an awful question b/c people aren't defined by their nationality but who they are as people.

2 minutes later:
Oh, here's an odd website. If the Burger King commercial freak you out watch this. Subservient Chicken

Freud letter to his fiancee Martha

Thu 05.19.2005 @ 1:39 pm
listening to: Soy La Otra

Ok, let me set this up. Freud during his academic years often tranlsated other scholar's works. On of these men was John Stuart Mill, an early spokeman for woman's rights. Freud discusses this point with Martha, his finacee in a letter he wrote her.

He [Mill] lacked the sense of the absurd, on several points, for instance in the emancipation of women and the question of women altogether. I remember that a main argument in the pamphlet I translated was that the married woman can earn as much as her husband... In all his writing it never appears that the woman is different from the man, which is not to say she is something less, if anything the opposite. For example he finds an analogy for the oppression of women in that of the Negro. Any girl, even without a vote and legal rights, whose hand is kissed by a man willing to risk his all for her love, could have put him right on this.

It seems a completely unrealistic notion to send women into the struggle for existence in the same way as men. Am I to think of my delicate sweet girl as a competitor? After all, the encounter could only end by my telling her, as I did seventeen months ago, that I love her, and that I will make every effort to get her out the competitive role into the quiet, undisturbed activity of the home. It is possible that a different education could suppress all women's delicate qualities-which are so much in need of protection and yet so powerful-with the result that they could earn their living like men. It is also possible that in this case it would not be justifiable to deplore the disappearance of the most lovely thing the world has to offer us: our ideal of womanhood. But I believe that all reforming activity, legislation, and education, will founder on the fact that long before the age at which a profession can be established in our society, nature will have appointed woman by her beauty, charm, and goodness, to do something else.

No, in this respect I adhere to the old ways, to my longing for my Martha as she is, and she herself will not want it different; legislation and custom have to grant women many rights kept from them, but the position of woman cannot be other that what it is: to be an adored sweetheart in youth, and a beloved wife in maturity.

I know alot of people will find this kind of 1880' matriachal thinking common place, but for an educated man who was a breakthrough psychiatrist and the father of psychoanalysis, for him to read about feminism and call it absurd really surprised me.

I do agree in one point he makes though, in the fact that men and women are different. Of course they are and there is no way around it. But from that to say that the goal of a woman should be to be dutiful wife and adornment on her husband's arm is absurd! Freud did not take into account the woman as an individual but as a stereotype which he got from his orthodox jewish upbringing and from the novels and literature he read. But even his religion shouldn't really be a factor in explaining his thinking on feminism b/c he rejected much of the customs of his religion. He questioned wether and educated man could really believe in a religion and God once he began the deconstruction of it's laws.

Anyway... yesterday I suffered insomnia again. The only difference is I'm not tired right now, but I am having the worst johnny craving, and me without a lighter.

Missed it

8:26 pm
Am I the only person that didn't know about Britney and Kevin's new reality show? I have had at least 5 conversions with friends about how trashy she is. They couldn't believe that I had missed it, much less believed me when I told them I had no idea about the show in the first place. I guess that's what happens when you substitute your tv with a book.

10:25 pm
I was watching the news and the big story tonight (at least in spanish news channels) was the apparent lack of judgement Thalia had. A few days back she was photographed walking down the street with her husband wearing a cap with + Che Guevara's image.

I've seen literally hundreds of americans wear tshirts, caps, watches etc... with Guevara's image so I didn't particularly see it as offensive. Why the outrage? Communism is alive and well in cuba and for the oppressed there Guevara is no hero or liberal activist like americans like to believe.

On her part Thalia released a statement saying the cap was given to her by a fan and she had not noticed the image of Guevara. She would never dream of offending her fans. (Of course not, they're her bread and butter) And at least in the latin world, you wear an image of Che Guevara you might as well be taking a picture next to Castro. I guess I better not wear my Guevara shirt out in public again ;)

I'm so tired... Yesterday I didn't have to come to work but I still woke up early so I could be tired enough to go to sleep around 11 that night. Didn't happen. I was physically tired but my brain wouldn't shut down so I ended finally sleeping around 4 am this morning, only to wake up at 7 then come to work. And now I'm tired. I would give anything to go home, turn on the AC full blast and huddle under the covers and sleep till November.
Why is it that I can't sleep at night but during the day I have to function like some sort of zombie? And to top it all off my allergies are bad today. I could already tell they were going to be yesterday and I took some pills at night. Both to make me feel better and also b/c they usually make me sleepy. But neither happened, only now I'm feeling like I'm in a cave from my pill induced state. ug.
One good thing. Souper salad decided not to take their ceasar salad off the menu so that means tonight I'll be dining there.

After I fell asleep you know what I dreamt? I've been reading alot of Freud lately and its somehow seeped into my unconsciousness. My dreamed circled around the actually words from the book swirling around me in a weird Sesame Street episode while Freud spat out his theories of women. I kept getting enraged at the dream Freud as he read some letters to his wife Martha about women being meant to stay at home, and then wanting to send him and his indirect misogynistic attitude to hell. lol.

I'll post some of the letters later on, b/c honestly, this is from the father of psychoanalysis and he thinks like an adolescent jerk.

Mosquitoes

watching: Metropolis

Last night I was laying in bed reading a book when I hear this annoying buzzing sound. This tiny mosquito was flying in circles above me like I was some dead carcass and he was going in for a feast. I swat it away with the book in my futile attempt to save myself from itchy, red mosquito bumps. The buzzing goes away and later on I turn off the light and go to sleep... only to hear the buzzing noise again right by my ear, which means that stupid insect was going to bite my face.

So the whole night I try to cover my entire body with the comforter which is torture b/c it's like a sauna in there and I'm sweating and itching all over thinking this insect has somehow gotten inside the covers.

I hate when that happens.

2 am: So I just came back from a drink with the girls. Met a wonderful taxi driver. Well, not really met but got reacquainted with Mr. Herbert, our taxi driver of choice.

He drove us when we had too many drinks at Casa Ole, and he droves after drinks at the British Pub. To make up for it we took him to an early (or late) dinner at IHOP where we got into this heated conversation with some teenage boys at the next table about animation porn, and whether they watch it or not, which they did by the guilty, red faced looks they gave Julie when she asked. Why did she ask? Because they were talking about it way too loudly for us to ignore it. =)

Today feels like it should be a Friday doesn't it? Or rather yesterday should have been a Friday and today should have been a Saturday so I could sleep all morning and wake up at one like it was intended after a heavy night of chatting, meeting new friends and drinking. We met so many people at the pub. A Mr. Wolf that was a motivational speaker and had turrets. Then two men who were from Nicaragua and Guatemala (I think) and then the band boys who played "Loved Her Madly" by the Doors but cut it off two verses early. *sigh*

This one is cute, though the pink is making me think twice. + Pink Ipod Carrier This one is also kinda cute, but also kinda pink + Purple/Pink Ipod Carrier

So far + this one is my favorite. The only problem is that is doesn't have anything to attach it to your jeans/pants.

I'm also finding out + about podcasting, very interesting

Podcasting is a way of publishing sound files to the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new audio files automatically. Podcasting is distinct from other types of audio content delivery because it uses the RSS protocol. This technique has enabled many producers to create self-published, syndicated radio shows.

Users subscribe to podcasts using "podcatching" software (also called "aggregator" software) which periodically checks for and downloads new content. It can then sync the content to the user's portable music player, hence the portmanteau of Apple's "iPod" and "broadcasting". Podcasting does not require an iPod, however; any digital audio player or computer with the appropriate software can play podcasts.

SAN ANTONIO - Prosecutors say a man who smothered his girlfriend's 6-year-old son and tried to cremate the body in an oven last year knew his actions were wrong. No Shit

Meanwhile, Kenneth Pierott's defense attorneys say the killing came at the hands of an insane man.

Eight women and four men were set to hear opening statements in Pierott's murder trial today. The 12 jurors were selected Monday from a pool of 75 in San Antonio, where the Beaumont case was moved because of intense media attention.

Pierott's defense attorney, Raquel Galle, said some jurors selected to hear the case knew about it, but said they could fairly evaluate the facts.

"There were quite a few who had information about the case," Galle said. "More than we had hoped."

Two court-appointed psychiatrists set to testify have concluded Pierott was insane at the time of the child's death, court documents indicate.

If the jurors agree with the experts, Pierott could spend a short time in a mental hospital for his second killing before he is released again. If convicted, he faces up to 99 years in prison. Is it considered insanity if you kill two people?

Pierott, 28, was charged with murder in April 2004 after 6-year-old Tre-Devin Odoms' body was found in the oven at his mother's Beaumont house. The gas was on, but the pilot light wasn't lit so the oven did not heat. An autopsy revealed the boy was smothered.

Pierott previously was found innocent by reason of insanity in the 1996 fatal beating of his sister, who suffered from cerebral palsy.

Stephanie Pierott, 25, weighed only 43 pounds when Pierott beat her with a dumbbell so severely that he displaced her eyeballs and crushed her skull.

Pierott spent about four months in a state mental hospital in 1998 before he was released and returned to Jefferson County.

Less than five years later, he was accused of killing the 6-year-old.

Pierott had stopped taking medication because "he felt better when he was not on medication," wrote Dr. Edward Gripon, one of two court-appointed experts set to testify.

"He felt that there was an adult living in a child's body and that he did not think the child was actually dead, and therefore, he did not think that what he had done was actually wrong," Gripon wrote.

The other court-appointed expert, Dr. Seth Silverman, concluded Pierott suffers from chronic paranoid schizophrenia. Silverman said Pierott lost 20 pounds in the weeks before Tre-Devin was smothered, stopped sleeping, became preoccupied with the Bible and stated repeatedly he was God. Okay, lets say this man is actually insane. With Chronic Paranoid Schizophrenia they shouldn't let that man leave the nut house, ever.

"'He was the devil, just like my sister,'" Pierott told Silverman, referring to the 6-year-old. "'I think that everything I chose to do would come through for the good.'"

Prosecutor Ed Shettle, however, said he plans to present evidence Pierott knew his actions were wrong.

In Texas, defendants are presumed sane. To prove insanity, a defendant must convince a jury he suffered from a severe mental disease or defect and did not know his actions were wrong.

Jurors in Pierott's latest case will not hear of his acquittal in his sister's killing.

According to court records, Pierott was arrested in 1999 for forging a $500 check and in March 2002 for punching the 6-year-old's mother in the face.

Why do all murderer's plead the insanity card? Because it actually gets them off and walking the streets within a year. Now it might have been possible that he "suffered" (and I'm using the term loosely) a bout of insanity once, but for it to happen twice and for this man to be judged insane and then set free is insanity.

You know, I've never really understood why we (in America) celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Nobody knows why either, it's just an excuse to party and a semi holiday for latin-americans (b/c we don't get the day off *sigh*).

Technically though, the 5th of may was when the mexican army fought the french. A small battle, anti climatic, non-important battle. Means nothing at all, and if you go to mexico people will tell you that the Cinco de Mayo is a stupid day to celebrate. They would offer maybe September 16th or The day of the revolution? But no, it's wrong to celebrate the independence day of another country and that also goes for it's revolution. So we celebrate today... but then what about all the other latin cultures here? Puerto Rican? Colombian? Cuban? How did Cinco de Mayo turn from a mexican day to a latin day?

Mariana Levy is a mexican actress. Aparently she was walking with her kids in Mexico City when some thugs attempted to rob her (it's not clear exactly what happened) and she had a heart attack and died. She didn't get robbed, but the doctors said that the shock she received sent her heart into cardiac arrest. Can you believe it? Dying of shock? That's horrible, and apparently now the mexican media is shouting from the roof tops how bad Mexico has gotten etc... Which I agree with, but even though I wish Levy's family the best and they have my most sincere sympathies, deep down I squirm at the fact that regular people are being killed everyday but only when a "superstar" dies does the media say anything about it.

Despite everything I now know unfortunately what it is like to lose someone you love, and I can only pray that she is in peace with God, and that her family finds the strength to soldier on and learn to live without her, b/c you may move on but you never forget.

It happens to me quite frequently, alot of the times I can even will myself to continue a particular dream if I was enjoying it, which is what happened last night. *smile* For some reason I was dreaming with Jim Morrison and as I woke up around 4 o'clock and safe to say I was bummed out. Especially when I realized I had woken up for not apparent reason and I still had a good three hours left to go before I had to wake up. Willing myself back to sleep I managed tp continue the dream without a hitch. Hehe, I love my unconscious when it listens to me.
